This loss follows them to the future. Driven deeper into grief by the death of a friend, they break into the building they left behind. “Black Box” explores what it is to be an artist, a Chicagoan, a queer person, and a friend.

Julie and Brian have embraced heteronormativity...and doing it flawlessly. The couple has moved into a fancy house in Massachusetts and are in the midst of the lengthy process of adopting a child. Brian is unsettled watching Julie contort herself to pass as cisgender in the process. When Julie is offered a job in New York, unlocking dreams she forgot she had, the couple is faced with the age old question: is it better to raise a kid in the city or the suburbs?
